The Special Adviser on Sports to the Lagos State Governor, Deji Tinubu has stated that the state’s desire to discover and groom more talents informed its decision to approve five sports championships for schools before the end of the year.
Last week, Governor Akinwunmi Abode approved the staging of five School
championships to be organised between now and end of the year, and Tinubu added that the organisation of these tournaments is part of the governor’s zeal to develop Sports at the Grass roots especially in the Schools where these budding athletes abound.
He stated that Ambode is so passionate about giving young athletes the chance to exhibit their God-given talents, as it is when they are discovered and groomed at their tender ages that they would become stars of tomorrow. “His Excellency, Governor Akinwunmi Abode has graciously approved the staging of five School Sports Championships. I can tell you that the first in the series will come up in the next two weeks.
“We will be having Championships in
Swimming, Table Tennis, Cricket, Scrabble and a Gymnastics initiative Programme designed to open up the Sporting Facilities in Lagos to the public. “We want to bring sports development to the schools as it is within this school environment that genuine and proper grassroots sports development can take its roots,” Tinubu said.
Apart from these schools tournaments holding, Twinsburg disclosed that a Squash competition was just being held at the Tesla Balogun Stadium, while Teslim Stadium will also play host to the Taekwondo International Classics.
